IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE BENEFICENT THE MERCIFUL

(Bismillāh ir-Raḥmān ir-Raḥīm)

“In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful” is the sacred opening phrase of Islam, known as Bismillāh ir-Raḥmān ir-Raḥīm. It is a declaration of faith, humility, and complete reliance on Allah before undertaking any action. Muslims begin their deeds, words, and intentions with this phrase to seek Allah’s guidance, blessings, and acceptance.

The phrase affirms that all power, mercy, and success belong to Allah alone. By invoking His name, believers acknowledge that every effort is dependent on His will and mercy. It reminds the heart to act sincerely, responsibly, and with consciousness of Allah (Taqwa).

The names Ar-Raḥmān (The Beneficent) and Ar-Raḥīm (The Merciful) highlight Allah’s boundless compassion. Ar-Raḥmān represents Allah’s universal mercy extended to all of creation—Muslims and non-Muslims alike—while Ar-Raḥīm reflects His special mercy granted to the believers. Together, they emphasize that mercy is the foundation of Allah’s relationship with humanity.
